LIKE MICK'N'KEEF, they have had their differences in the past, but now the tension between Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry appears to have reached breaking point. So much so that Perry believes that Tyler has now left the band he helped form in 1970.
"Steven quit as far as I can tell," said Perry speaking to the Las Vegas Sun newspaper on Friday November 6. "I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don't know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don't know."
The relationship between the singer and his fellow bandmates deteriorated earlier this year when Tyler fell from the stage in August while performing in Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, South Dakota. He suffered a broken shoulder and had to be hospitalized, forcing Aerosmith to cancel a number of summer shows much to the rest of the band's annoyance.
The Boston five-piece, however, were back on stage more recently when they played the Formula 1 finale in Abu Dhabi on November 1 but the atmosphere within the Aerosmith camp was described as "appalling" by one outside observer, who reported that Tyler did not interact with other band members prior to taking to the stage.
Perry is also understood to have been angered by the singer's refusal to commit to a new Aerosmith studio album which would have seen the band eschew their now-customary glossy power ballads for the hard rock sound that defined their early career.
The guitarist's frustration led to his decision to resurrect The Joe Perry Project - with whom he has recorded a new LP, Have Guitar, Will Travel. The guitarist describes his decision to work on his solo outing as a way of avoiding "a lot of sitting around" as a result of Aerosmith's inactivity.
Tyler recently helped form Dirico Motorcycles, a bike manufacturer, and has declared that he would be working on "Brand Tyler". The singer has also reportedly been considering lining up a series of shows in Las Vegas featuring a cast of friends and fellow musicians, but has yet to comment on whether he remains a member of Aerosmith.
Perry, however, is clear that should the singer finally decide to forge a career away from the band, Aerosmith will carry on.
"Aerosmith is such a powerful band, it's like a steam locomotive," Perry told the Las Vegas Sun. "As far as replacing Steve, it's not just about that, it's also four guys that play extremely well together, and I'm not going to see that go to waste. I really don't know what path it's going to take at this point, but we'll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we'll be able to move Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch."

pfff... i don't like that... they haven't recorded new material since their overproduced and too clean 2001 record...
I mean their 2004 album was just reprise and covers (i think) so Steven is no really symphatic with his fans... ok if he wants to leave ...but don't makes us wait so many years before give us that bad joke...when i think that last year and until mid 2009 i've told to my bro: "at last they are in studio to record, a new rockier album"... i don't like false hope ...
but Please a lot of fans don't want somebody who came out from one of those plastic commercial tv shows to replace steven... is it x-factor !? with singers with re-modelate noses ...no thanks.
you know what ...the new Aerosmith could be good enough with Paul Rogers...or with youngers as the singer of Reef...or Crispian Mills of Kula Shaker...or...i can give 20 more names...
