60 years ago this month Sun Records opened its doors for the first time. MOJO salutes rock'n'roll's ground zero...
SAM PHILLIPS OPENED the doors to his Memphis Recording Service at 706 Union Avenue on January 3, 1950. Cramming his Presto five-input mixer board and PT900 portable recorder into a room just 25 feet deep and 35 feet wide, he began transforming the shape of American music. By melding the fervour of black Mississippi blues and gospel to the white radio sound of hillbilly and country, Phillips would give the world Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, B.B. King and Roy Orbison. Forever searching for that new sound, Phillips found what he was looking for when an 18-year-old Elvis Presley walked into the Sun offices to enquire how much it would cost to make a record. "Who do you sound like?" enquired receptionist Marion Keisker. Elvis looked up and said, "I don't sound like nobody". How right he was.

"I don't sound like nobody". How right he was? However, 'Trying to get to you,' by the Eagles was, apparently, released before Elvis covered the song during his Sun period. Give it a listen. Almost all the, now celebrated, trademark 'Elvis' sounds of the Sun period are on that record.
