ONCE DISMISSED AS the camp ravings of a wonky-toothed Anthony Newley wannabe, David Bowie's first album - released on the Decca-connected Deram label - is now recognised for its strengths: theatrical songs and sweeping arrangements capturing a lesser-known Bowie persona that prefigured his folk-rock and glam reinventions.
It was 1967. Elsewhere, psychedelia was happening, but Bowie was out of step in a way it's taken rock fans over 40 years to fully appreciate (there's a very good Will Hodgkinson article about it here). Lukewarm contemporary reaction to his painstakingly-crafted West-End pop narratives cast Bowie into a slump, but by obliging him to rethink his approach from top-to-bottom, in a way it set the tone for what was to follow: the "chameleonic" transformations of Bowie cliché, the flight from anything that might be mistaken for a definition of the "real" David Jones.
2010's Deluxe edition presents both the original mono and stereo mixes while Disc Two includes such rarities as the non-album b-sides The London Boys and The Gospel According To Tony Day, plus 12 unreleased tracks, including Bowie's first ever BBC session, commercially unreleased until now.
