Lost Sandy Denny Recordings Unearthed

A 19-disc Sandy Denny box set is set to emerge on October 4 on Universal Music Catalogue. In addition to 11 discs of the folk-rock siren's released material with Alex Campbell, Johnny Silvo, Fotheringay, Strawbs, Fairport Convention and solo, augmented by outtakes, live tracks and demo versions, there are eight (count 'em) CDs of bonus material - including unreleased BBC recordings, alternate takes, acoustic versions and rare radio interviews. Among the unreleased tracks is the legendarily long lost Lord Bateman, once intended for her first solo album, The North Star Grassman & The Ravens.

Artwork includes a 72-page, 11" square hardback book containing over 100 rare photographs, Denny's handwritten lyrics and memorabilia including a reproduction of the receipt for the starlet's first piano. The box set will be limited to only 3000 copies worldwide. A second edition, limited to 100 sets, is available only from the Island 50 web store. It comes with a framed print of the artwork, signed by the artist and individually addressed to each purchaser.

MOJO can exclusively preview the acoustic demo version of I'm A Dreamer, a gorgeous signifier of Denny's mid-'70s move into a more mainstream rock sound, but pre-dating the controversial Trevor Lucas arrangements that some fans feel obscured her last solo album, Rendezvous. Within a year of its May 1977 release, Denny would be dead, from complications following a fall down a staircase.

Here's I'm A Dreamer...

Denny's pure and lyrical voice remains arguably the definitive instrument of British folk-rock, driving the genres twin apogees, Fairport Convention's Liege & Lief and Unhalfbricking albums and duetting with Robert Plant on Led Zeppelin IV's The Battle Of Evermore.

You can pre-order the box set from this address. Meanwhile, keep an eye on MOJO4music.com for a Sandy Denny competition with a tempting, exclusive prize.

  • Sandy is at her best in such a setting, either simple acoustic demos such as this one or unadorned live shows like those on her Live at the Beeb box.

Can't wait to hear everything contained in the new box set!

  • As a fan of Sandy's since the original Who Knows etc box set came out on vinyl all those years ago, I have already ordered the new box with the artwork framed!!
It looks like a beautiful package and a fitting tribute to the late great Sandy Denny.
Am now wishing October would come quickly!

  • A place to be seen...

    In a promise
    there's the
    light that
    always remains
    like a delicate
    leaf in the
    dark of a forest,
    and there, in
    your eyes, I
    see beautiful
    skies and a tender
    relief.

  • El sonido de los sentimientos.

    La noche me
    llama, dulce
    y llena de pasión;
    escucho el aire
    pasar suavemente
    donde un vivo
    destino cubre
    la rima y la
    timida suerte,
    duermo en el
    sueño de una
    triste canción....

  • Douceur.

    Marcher avec
    toi est le
    tendre cadeu
    qui rappelle,
    dans le son
    du soleil, le
    naturel chant
    et la docile
    doctrine.

  • Touch of harmony.

    With white
    colours recalling
    sounds and a
    sweet sensibility
    you touch my
    desire, the inner
    relief and a
    delicate sadness
    that covers
    the sun.

  • Clarté.

    Je me sens
    très las, quand
    le son de la
    neige doucement
    disparaît comme
    la voix mélodique
    d'un chant très
    heureux: j'écoute
    l'atmosphère,
    l'amour et la vie.

  • With hair falling over the shoulders.

    In the soft
    chirping of
    the new day
    there's a delicate
    quietness, and
    even a fantasy,
    like a velvety
    flight in the
    sound of a word.
