Mavis Staples & Jeff Tweedy Video Exclusive!

10:47 AM GMT 24/08/2010

Mavis Staples, southern soul legend and bona fide gospel queen, will release her new album, You Are Not Alone, on September 13.

The record has been produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and includes reinterpretations of tracks by the likes of Randy Newman, Allen Toussaint, John Fogerty, Rev. Gary Davis, Little Milton and Mavis's father, the legendary Pops Staples. Tweedy, who also plays guitar and bass on the LP, has also contributed two new songs. Receiving four stars in the current issue of the magazine, the record is made up of "country soul reworkings of the gospel and blues songbook" with MOJO's Lois Wilson calling Mavis' vocal performances "intense, deep... and quite simply jaw-dropping".

You Are Not Alone follows Staples' last studio album, 2007's Ry Cooder-produced We'll Never Turn Back, and the following year's Grammy-nominated Live: Hope At The Hideout.

  • Solid sound, storng voices, nice and simple orchestrations. A work of maturity. Staples could be funky without being raw or crude. Nice choice guys! Thank you again
