Status Quo
Hello!

Heads-down, see you at the end...

Status Quo

The 27-year hangover that has lingered since the nadir of Marguerita Time, has seen the Quo legend tarnished further by fair-to-dire albums, the celebrity support of Corrie's Dad-rocker Les Battersby and the 'controversy' caused by Francis Rossi's decision to hack off his trademarked ponytail. In this light it's easy to forget that between the release of the career-defining Piledriver in January 1973 and the dawn of the '80s (which saw the release of faltering Never Too Late), as a hard rock band the Quo were unrivalled in the UK terms of popularity and unassailable in terms of productivity. In that time they released a remarkable run of 11 albums, all of which dented the Top 5 in the UK. September 1973's Hello!, their sixth studio effort and their first Number 1 album (deposing Slade's Sladest compilation at the top of the charts), underlines the evergreen appeal of their three-chord boogie wallop. Roll Over Lay Down, Forty Five Hundred Times and Caroline (their first UK Top 5 single) remain British rock classics on what is a definitive dandruff-liberating set whose appeal remains undimmed.

  • Always had a soft spot for 70's Quo, deeply unfashionable, but aren't we all dear. Lets be honest, they aren't a million miles from the more revered boogiemeisters (Hello ZZ Top!) and their Sunday slot at last years Glasto drew one of the biggest crowds of the weekend. I know 'cos I was there and I loved it!!

  • I'm sorry, but this hasn't aged well. I had fond memories of Status Quo but I've listened to this record recently. It's really dreadful.

  • You do not get much closer to the source than Quo did with this record. If I were permitted just one song to have with me when deserted on an island it would have to be "Caroline."
