Schwingungen

Brain-burning wig-out masterwork from experimental Kosmische wizards.

Ash Ra Tempel

In his 1995 kosmi-pedia Krautrocksampler, Julian Cope insists that all copies of this album should come with a warning sticker such is the transcendent, life-altering power of the music that lies within. Personally, I think it's always better to approach Schwingungen with no caution whatsoever, opening up to the full force of its three-track free-rock fuck-you. At a relatively breezy six minutes and 20 seconds, Light: Look at Your Sun is a deceptively welcoming opener, its smouldering blues drone reminiscent of The Doors at their most languid and epic (see Riders On The Storm). But vocal preacher John L is no crooning Jim Morrison. This guy is terrifying and even at his most reserved sounds like a tortured freak looking into the abyss ("We are all one", he intones, unsettlingly. "We are all one"). After the calm comes the storm, in the form of the 12-minute-plus Darkness: Flowers Must Die - a creation seemingly born on the burning slopes of some volcanic land. Another John L mantra signifies the start of a tribal groove that builds to a trepanning conclusion where blasts on the saxophone meet galactic guitar abandon under a shadow of unnerving electronic phasing. Unsurprisingly then, it's an ideal record to listen to on your way to work. Invest in the ritualistic rhythms of the 20-minute title track and your commute will become an altogether more rewarding experience. I guarantee it.
