(Dead Oceans, 2010)
Portland baroque pop duo discover the joys of electronica.
White Hinterland are nothing if not adventurous. Their 2008 Dead Oceans debut, Phylactery Factory, served up nine tracks of eccentric jazz-flecked, home-spun dream-pop centred around Casey Dienel's piano playing and her enchanting vocal reveries. The follow-up consisted of Luniculaire, a French EP based around covers of material by Brigitte Fontaine, Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy. Now, having spent the last year absorbing minimalist beats and pure pop (tellingly, Dienel's favourite track of 2009 was Beyoncé's Halo and she has covered Justin Timberlake tunes), Casey and collaborator Shawn Creeden deliver a bold affair that eschews their previous organic approach in favour of an altogether more electronic direction. The effect is utterly intoxicating, tracks like Amsterdam, No Logic, and Cataract marrying an irresistibly chilled synth-pop edge to lo-fi spectral arrangements that sit somewhere between Kate Bush and Arthur Russell at their most accessible. And, as its title suggests (it's the Greek for "the perfect moment", or thereabouts) supremely timed to tie in with those resurrected '80s vibes we're bathing in right now...

I first read about White Hinterland in this magazine, thanks to you I've listened to all their releases. Each one is different, but Kairos is the one that hits the spot for me. Certainly one of the best releases this year. this is a good review, I can't help thinking that there is even better stuff to come from this duo in the future. A wonderful listen.
