Blood Of The Earth

Four decades on, Dave Brock stills outdoes NASA.

Hawkwind

In the 41 years since Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, mankind's adventures in space have been frankly disappointing. Thankfully, during that same period, Hawkwind's exploration of the outer-limits has been far more satisfying. While later recordings have been patchy, Blood Of The Earth is the sound of a band rejuvenated. Epic, richly textured and absorbing, the material ranges from the cyber-punk rush of Wraith to the Floyd-ian atmospherics of Green Machine, a re-working of You'd Better Believe It (originally from '74's In The Hall Of The Mountain Grill album) illustrating the band's view of their music as a continuum. Final track Starshine is an epitaph for their keyboard player Jason Stuart who tragically died of a brain haemorrhage and serves as a reminder of the band's at times fraught but familial unity.

  • A decent, solid album but not one of their classics. If you are going to get this, get the limited edition with the extra CD. I saw them live last month and they were excellent.

  • This sounds fine to me and I go way back with this band. What a nice surprise.
