Max Décharné compiled wild rockin' and boppin' soundtrack to his book of the same name.
When Elvis Presley, Scotty and Bill released five singles for Sam Phillips' Sun Records and toured the US South leaving screaming teenagers in their trail in 1954-5, they acted as a catalyst for thousands eager to emulate the Hillbilly Cat's success. Presley's haunting, accelerated cover of Junior Parker's Mystery Train features here, a near perfect meld of slap bass hillbilly boogie and chugging R&B. Nothing else tops this rockabilly apotheosis, but a succession of whooping and hollering country boys (and one girl) sure whip up a storm trying, with Wanda Jackson's sassy Mean, Mean Man coming close. Such is Décharné's expert ear that despite providing a selection heavily weighted towards the obscure, this 28-tracker still acts as a superb genre primer with the demented likes of Gene Maltais and Ronnie Self helping to turn up the heat.
