Features Disc of the day

Vetiver
Tight Knit

Still powerful third album of original material from Andy Cabic's folk moodists.

Vetiver

In MOJO 184 the ever-smart Brian Eno discussed the music world's current passion for recycling. "I find it interesting," he said. "They're recording a story and an image of what people were like and how they could be, recombining [elements] so we hear them differently." One of the truly great recyclers is Andy Cabic who, with Vetiver has seemingly imagined the music George Harrison might have made if he'd never returned to England in 1967, but just remained at his house on Blue Jay Way, up in the Hollywood Hills, getting stoned with Cyd Charisse and The Buffalo Springfield. Recorded in Sacramento and Los Angeles, Tight Knit is a beautiful, lazy album of befogged west coast dreams, in which - backed by spare guitar/bass/drums arrangements, and occasional stipples of piano - Cabic's amiable, balmy voice sings of freedom, escape and, erm, generally not coming back. The perfect getaway for these wet winter days.
