VIDEO PLAYLIST: Nirvana-Rama!

11:17 AM GMT 25/01/2011

In August 1991, a month before the release of Nevermind, Kurt Cobain was homeless and sleeping in the back of his car. Six months later, Nirvana's second album - led by the MTV-conquering Smells Like Teen Spirit - would knock Michael Jackson's Dangerous off the top of the Billboard charts and change the lives of Cobain and his bandmates forever. In the latest issue of MOJO magazine, we look back on that whirlwind year. Here we present five of the band's 1991 TV appearances. Each represents another step on the path to stardom. And there was a lot of fun to be had on the way...

Headbangers Ball
Air date: October 25, 1991

"We hope we can turn people on to different types of music...there's more bands out there than just these mainstream, Harley-riding rock bands," says Krist Novoselic to host Riki Rachtman - a big-haired metalhead who looks like he belongs in a mainstream, Harley-riding rock band. Cobain, wearing a yellow ball gown and shades, looks into the camera. The generational schism begins here.

The Word
Air date: November 8, 1991

Cobain declares Courtney Love "the best f**k in the world" before kick-starting Nirvana's first live UK TV appearance with a furiously berserk performance of Smells Like Teen Spirit. ________________________________________________________________________

Top Of The Pops
Air date: November 28, 1991

After two weeks in Europe and with Smells Like Teen Spirit sitting at Number 9 in the UK charts, Nirvana returned to Britain to film Top Of The Pops. Cue a plummeting bass vocal from Cobain and purposely out-of-sync miming from Grohl and Novoselic. ________________________________________________________________________

The Jonathan Ross Show
Air date: December 6, 1991

Scheduled to perform Lithium on Jonathan Ross's Channel 4 chat show, the band decided instead to opt for the combustible onslaught of Territorial Pissings. Cobain's amp stack is barged to the floor, Grohl's drum kit is trashed and the host is left with ringing in his ears. ________________________________________________________________________

Rapido
Air date: December 18, 1991

Introduced as "the only true grass roots phenomenon of the year", Nirvana's interview segment on the Antoine de Caunes-hosted music show was filmed around the band's gig at Sheffield Octagon Centre on November 28. MOJO's Keith Cameron: "Watching it now, the Rapido footage perfectly encapsulates the mood of naïve wonder that surrounded Nirvana during this period." ________________________________________________________________________

  • I never liked Nirvana. Never ever. Alice in chains, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam (in that order) are soooo much beettr. However, you cannot deny the power that the chorus of Smells like Teen Spirit still has. That song single-handedly closed the book on a decade that had lasted long past its due.For those interested, In Bloom is the only one I really like. Its a good one.
