The top table Afro-Cuban collaboration Buena Vista should have been.

Afrocubism

In 1996, World Circuit's Nick Gold had the idea of getting a bunch of Malian musicians out to Cuba to collaborate with their counterparts in Havana. Cuban guitarist Eliades Ochoa was to get a group together but unfortunately the Malians didn't get the right visas and never made it, so Gold asked Ochoa to coax whichever musicians from Cuba's golden age he could out of retirement. Nine million album sales later, the Buena Vista Social Club is a household name. Now here is the album that was meant to be. Kora master Toumani Diabaté and Rail Band guitarist Djelimady Tounkara represent the cream of Malian musicians, while Ochoa's Grupo Patria provides the rhythmic discipline needed to make sense of the collaboration. Cuban and West African music blends remarkably well. On the heartfelt Ai Vaiven Mi Carreto, the joyous Karamo, and a languid version of Guantanamera, it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.
