(Reissued, Silva Screen, 2010)
Definitive repackaging for Brit soundtrack cornerstone.
The first instalment in Silva Screen's Roy Budd reissue series is the welcome return of his score for Mike Hodges' 1971 Newcastle noir masterpiece. Often dismissed with the faint praise of "kitsch cool", Budd's Carter soundtrack always sounded closer to the odder experiments of the British '70s jazz scene, a drummerless trio working with acoustic bass, percussion, harpsichord, Rhodes piano and teen male vocals producing something as distinct and strange as John Cameron's Off Centre or Terry Durham's Crystal Telephone. This release, the most complete so far, includes extended liner notes featuring essays from director Mike Hodges and superfan Jonathan Ross, a Budd appreciation from jazz scholar Roy Carr and interviews with Budd's musical collaborators (The Dudley Moore Trio's bassist and percussionist, Jeff Clyne and Chris Karan) and the soundtrack's callow Geordie vocalists (and later Blockheads) Mickey Gallagher and Johnny Turnbull.

A great soundtrack, and stands up well against the giants of british soundtracks e.g. John Barry.
I think its power and relevance was diluted somewhat by the lounge/kitsch boom of the mid-90s when it appeared on every cult/70s etc compilation known to man.
Close your eyes and drift away....

Lovely stuff - perfect on a clear spring morning when the sky is blue, coffee's brewing and I don't have anything pressing on my mind!
