Matthew Dear
Black City

Saucy vocal electronica from techno's renaissance man.

Matthew Dear

With 2007's Asa Breed, Matthew Dear crafted dancefloor-savvy electropop in love with music and with love itself. One can only guess at what's been going on in Dear's life in the interim. But it appears to involve sex. And lots of it, for Black City is 50 minutes of sweaty, grinding, seductive techtronica. Denser, darker and deeper than its predecessor, it's best evidenced by the creeping, creepy cosmic disco of Little People (Black City) and the paranoid Jarre-meets-Krautrock shufflings of More Surgery. Yet Black City isn't just about Dear's exemplary synth work; his voice is an equally powerful tool. Take You Put A Smell On Me, which - ahem - climaxes with Dear's crackling tenor growl intoning "little red night gown" to fade over a helicopter-blade techno rhythm. Black City is the devil leering over Asa Breed's shoulder; a seedy, dirty place - but an endlessly fascinating one, too.

  • This album has been up here since Feb 18th. It is now March 10th. This is supposed to be Album of the Day not the month. Has everybody at Mojo Towers suddenly died?
