Familial

Radiohead's drummer makes solo acoustic album. No, come back!

Phil Selway

There's no getting away from the fact that this is an album by Radiohead's drummer, but reducing Phil Selway to such glib comparisons does Familial a mighty disservice. Don't expect Thom Yorke's twisting-on-a-pinhead angst here: the metaphorical black dog in the cellar of By Some Miracle is as near to a dark night of the soul as it gets. Selway instead gives voice to those moments when we all look in the mirror, take a deep breath and just get on with our lives, where responsibility is weighed and discharged rather than dismissed with rock's default setting of petulant 'why me' teenage pique. Familial is an acoustically plucked, feet-on-the-ground record, Selway's fragile and inviting voice a delightful match for his slightly anxious, if misplaced, self-doubt. Credit where it's due: it's time to give the drummer some.
