Scott Walker
Scott 3

Mahogany-voiced godhead reaches for the strange. Good in a downpour.

Scott Walker

Some records are made for rain, and Scott 3 comes into its own via headphones as you zone out on the top deck of the bus, watching bedraggled humanity trudge "cellophane streets" through Walker's merciless microscope. There's Big Louise, the plus-size ladyman smashed by life's disappointment: "She's a haunted house, and her windows are broken". And there's poor Rosemary, sealed in amber, dreaming of travelling salesman Mr. Jim, who "smelled of miracles" and had his wicked way. Walker - born in Ohio of German parents - had the 20th Century Euro-fiction trope of entrapment to a tee, and his first album of largely self-penned tracks is full of the torment of the crabbed and thwarted, partnered exquisitely by Wally Stott's avant-lounge arrangements, the latter exemplified by the gothic swoops that open Winter Night, the music box ending of groovy blues vignette, 30th Century Man, and the constrained, febrile shimmer of It's Raining Today's strings - which I fancy to have influenced Jonny Greenwood's similarly taut arrangements on this. Walker would spiral further into the avant-garde on the equally ace Scott 4 before washing up on the featureless plateau of his muzak years, while light-music veteran Stott (his witty music for Hancock and the Goons endures) would undergo a sex change in 1972 - becoming Angela Morley - and continued to pen award-winning orchestrations until the late-'80s. The real-life Big Louise? There's a question for when MOJO next meets Scott - who's writing a score for Jean Cocteau's 1932 play Duet For One, due to be staged in the Royal Opera House's Linbury Studio theatre in June 2011.

  • Alongside "Scott 4", this is the Scott Walker's masterpiece. Full of marvellous songs (with special mention to "It's Raining Today", "Copenhagen" and "Big Louise"), the arrangements of Wally Stott and the extraordinary voice of Engel shines over the ice, because it's a cold ambient but with a inner hot very pleasant.

Without any question, one of the greatest albums of all time.
