(Capitol, 1992)
Desert rocker Chris Goss enlists drum titan Ginger Baker. And allows him to bemoan American tea....
When Rick Rubin signed greasy Syracuse outfit Masters Of Reality to his Def American label in 1988 he was sure he'd signed the spiritual heirs to Cream. The band's self-titled debut album - sometimes referred to as The Blue Garden due its sleeve - emerged in the same year and, despite the critical acclaim, sold modestly forcing band and label to part company. Masters mainstay Chris Goss went into musical hibernation. He re-emerged four years later with fellow MOR bassist Googe, this time with Cream drummer Ginger Baker in tow, and delivered this sterling second effort.
Indeed, Sunrise... once again confirmed Goss's ability to harness the kind of psychedelic hard rock grooves not heard this side of 1968 via tracks like She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress On), Jody Sings and Tilt-A-Whirl - all of which sparkled with post-White Album gold-dust. Baker also co-wrote a number of the tracks including J.B. Witchdance and Ants In The Kitchen. The album's most startling track, however, proved to be T.U.S.A - a tune which saw Baker deliver a monologue in which he berated Americans for their inability to make a decent cuppa. A fine slice of kitchen sink psychedelia, if you will.
Unfortunately, Sunrise... proved as successful as its predecessor and remains one of the long lost albums of the '90s. It was reissued in 2001 but, in the wake of Goss's latter day import as a desert rock figurehead/producer and Josh Homme affiliate, somebody somewhere really should dust it down one more time. It really is that good.

I clearly remember this and Blues For The Red Sun by Kyuss being greeted with sensational critical acclaim and let down by disastrously by distribution.
Try as one might, a copy could not be had for love nor money.

I live in Syracuse and I remember the local reaction to Masters--not very encouraging. This town has a habit of ignoring the homegrown guys who make good and have major label success (definition of success: being signed to a major label).
Another homegrown unknown (locally), Ed Hamell, just made a return to the Salt City this past December playing a show at the "newly" renovated Lost Horizon. I know the Austin, TX area and you punters in the UK took a liking to this fella. Good on ya' mates!

Good shout for disc of the day. It was one of my discs of the year when it was released. Chris Goss found a great middle ground somewhere between ZZ Top and the Smashing Pumpkins! I don't think the Masters ever topped this record. It is LONG due a re-release and a release on vinyl, which never happened the first time around...
