Epic Danish jams, for when the neighbours get you down.

Causa Sui

Right now, over in the offices of the other music magazine on this floor, they're playing a pop record that contains a nagging refrain that sounds a bit like "It doesn't make it alright..." and seems to go on for about eight minutes, repeating the refrain, round and round, again and again, before it finishes. Then they play it again. It's probably very popular. It might be Number One. But I needed an antidote so I reached for this, a year-old triple CD of epic psychedelic jams from space-kraut jazzers Causa Sui ("The cause of itself", in Latin, the phrase cribbed from 17th Century Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza). Formed in the latesummer of 2004 (apparently MOJO promised its readers that everyone would be listening to them in 2006. Ho. Ho.), this Danish four-piece - now operating as a power trio of Jonas Munk (Guitars, keys, electronics & vocals), Jess Kahr (Bass) and Jakob Skøtt (Drums & percussion) - unashamedly reference such esteemed cosmic talents as Blue Cheer, Guru Guru, Amon Düül II and Ash Ra Tempel. Yes, it's another improv quest for the heart of sonic enlightenment, but they do it with a conviction, dexterity and drive that few modern bands possess. And at this moment, as the slamming, 23-minute supercharged wah-wah freak out Tropic of Capricorn starts motoring out into the fast lane, bending trees, smashing rear-view mirrors and totally drowning out the needling popear-worm playing over in the other office, I wouldn't want to be listening to anything else.
