A double bass playing, composing, bandleading giant of jazz, Charles Mingus started his career in the early 1940s and took his final bow in 1979. His reputation is still fearsome - "not suffering fools gladly" is a diplomatic way of describing his attitude to players, audiences and even instruments he felt weren't investing as much as he was - but if he expected a lot, so Mingus gave. There's a mind-boggling discography out there of the man as leader and sideman and this month's challenge is, which of his works, rooted in the traditions of jazz but possessed of a blazing, in-the-moment spirit, are the ones you need? 1959's Blues & Roots? 63's The Black Saint & the Sinner Lady? How about Changes One and Changes Two from 1974? You tell us!
And the best comments and recommendations will appear in the next issue. Thanks!
