Sky
Sky 2
(Ariola, 1980)
This classical rock/jazz/pop ensemble led by virtuoso guitarist John Williams were launched with the up-yours slogan ‘FIVE OF THE MOST RESPECTED MUSICIANS ON EARTH ARE IN SKY’ in 1979. And they made for a strange but exciting Top Of The Pops viewing experience when their satanic, big-tune version of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor got to Number 5 in April 1980 (they wore ties, played sitting down and in face-pulling session ace Tristan Fry seemed to have a young Ronnie Barker on drums). The accompanying long player, which mixed un-rocking chamber music, whimsical tuba-tunes and synthetic noodling, got to Number 1 in the same month. IH
