THE MOJO MESSENGER: 24/06/11
Intro Pic
Big Man, R.I.P.
Last weekend, the world sadly bade farewell to Clarence Clemons. The E Street Band's soulful, stoical sax player made an indelible mark on some of the Boss's greatest songs (Born To Run, Thunder Road, Badlands and Jungleland among them). We look back at his life in music here. Elsewhere this week, we announced this year's run of Glenfiddich MOJO Honours List gigs. The Horrors, The Jim Jones Revue and John Grant will all grace the stage at London's 100 Club next month. Get your tickets by following the links below. We'll be back next week with a new issue of the magazine featuring an exclusive interview with one of the greatest songwriters, singers, bassists and, er... synth-prodders of all time. See you then.

MOJO’S SHORTCUTS: the express route to rock/web weirdness
Wild Man Fischer
Wild Man Fischer
News reached MOJO recently that cult songwriter Larry 'Wild Man' Fischer passed away on June 16. Here he is performing on the streets of L.A. back in the '80s.
Radiohead
Radiohead
It was a good week for Radiohead fans as the band premiered new song Staircase online.
The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground
Time for some vintage footage of the Velvets in their 1966 prime. Does rehearsing get any cooler?
Blow Your Mind
How To Blow Your Mind
"It's easy to organize a FREAK-OUT PARTY, all you have to do is relax your mind and let things happen. Digging wild psychedelic colors, swinging with way-out sounds, grooving on yourself, grooving on everything at once." And there's more...
Nile Rodgers & Miles Davis
Miles Davis
Nile Rodgers introduces "artist in residence" Miles Davis on his New Visions TV show in 1990 – a man who "likes a woman with long legs and a short thigh".
Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones
It's 1965 and the Stones have arrived in Montreal where a loquacious Brian Jones holds court on American attitudes, Tamla Motown and how the band has "learned a lot about life".
Damon Albarn
Damon Albarn
The Blur man's new opera, Dr. Dee: An English Opera, will premiere in Manchester next month. Here he is performing new track Apple Carts on British TV at the weekend.
The Pogo
The Pogo
Here's a great speculative article on the origin of the pogo. Beatles connection, natch.
The Parliaments
Parliament
We'll end this week with some amazing rare footage of an utterly funky, totally wired Parliament in 1969. "Groove on brother, for we will not harm you".
