45 YEARS AGO this month, Pink Floyd began recording the first side of what was to become, Ummagumma - an album at the centre of the most fascinating period of their career. Following the departure of their principal composer Syd Barrett in 1968, the band attempted to find a sustainable sound. Of the many paths they tried – psychedelic freak-out, film soundtrack, symphonic splurge, themed multi-part epic, standard songform – some turned out to be dead ends but the end result was unique, amazing music that ultimately manifested itself in the mastery of The Dark Side Of The Moon.
