HAVING ACHIEVED CULT STATUS as Plush, recognition for Liam Hayes' actual name looks set to grow again as he returns with a new album early next year – and MOJO has an exclusive preview. Slurrup, released on January 12, is the Chicago singer-songwriter’s second record under his own name and we have Fokus, the album’s centrepiece, below.
A heady mix of Haynes' woozy vocals and taught, bounding guitars, the track is a psych-pop blast yet it also boasts a charming, heartfelt underbelly.
"This record seems to repel anything that’s incongruent with its personality," suggests Hayes of Slurrup's feel. "It has a mind of its own."
Having released two albums as Plush, Haynes appeared as himself in the film of High Fidelity and that presumably must have triggered something as his next record, 2009's Bright Penny, came out under his own name.
Haynes will follow Slurrup's release with a sole UK solo show the next day, playing London's Servant Jazz Quarters on January 13, before kicking off a short American tour at New York's Mercury Lounge on January 25.
Here's the premiere of Fokus.
