Presenting MOJO’s finest writing on Jimi Hendrix in a single deluxe volume, MOJO The Collectors’ Series Jimi Hendrix EXPERIENCED 1942-1970 is on sale now and available to order HERE.

In December 1966, when Jimi Hendrix played an early show in London to a select audience including Jeff Beck and Pete Townshend, at least one of those esteemed English guitarists declared they were giving up their instrument on the spot. Widely acknowledged as the greatest rock guitar player of all time, Hendrix would go on to influence many more six-string aces, from Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page to Eddie Van Halen, Prince, Slash and Jack White. In celebration of Jimi’s extraordinary music and tragically short life, MOJO has now brought together its finest writing on the guitarist in a deluxe 132-page bookazine.

Our journey begins with writer Charles R. Cross delving into Hendrix’s troubled early life in Seattle and his years jobbing in US soul and R&B groups, before Jimi’s career took off spectacularly in London in 1966. There, amid the technicolour blaze of psychedelia and blues rock, music journalist Chris Welch recalls befriending the guitarist, before Hendrix set off to conquer America with his showboating appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, famously setting fire to his Stratocaster on-stage.

Elsewhere, Charles Shaar Murray looks at Jimi’s uneasy relationship with The Black Panthers and revolutionary late ’60s politics, before Michael Simmons casts new light on the guitarist’s final 18 months, including his legendary set at the Woodstock festival in 1969 and his short-lived Band Of Gypsys project. Sadly, Jimi would pass away in September 1970 from an accidental overdose, but his mind-blowing psychedelic rock and inspirational message of peace and love endure.

With the stories behind his greatest songs, and illustrated with dozens of rare and iconic photographs, EXPERIENCED 1942-1970 is an essential purchase for Jimi Hendrix fans and music connoisseurs everywhere.
