Though famously home to Ritchie Blackmore’s “Can we have everything louder than everything else?” quip, Made In Japan opens sedately, Purple deploying an orchestra-like tune-up before Highway Star floors the accelerator. Here remixed in stereo and Atmos by revamper _de nos jour_s Steven Wilson, it’s still an extraordinarily visceral-sounding record, Ian Gillan’s Olympian wailing on Child In Time and Jon Lord’s brutally overdrawn Hammond on Lazy rattling the fillings. Though life is perhaps too short to spend more quality time with Smoke On The Water, not even that old warhorse can dent Made In Japan’s potency, its August 1972 shows from Osaka and Tokyo stellar feats of virtuosity despite the internal tensions that were already raging. Try Purple’s take on Little Richard’s Lucille, a barnstorming addition to the album’s original tracklisting alongside single edits made for German, Mexican and US radio.
