Robyn Hitchcock - The Confuser
★★★★
TINY GHOST

“When I decompose I will be part of everything,” announces Robyn Hitchcock on I Am This Thing, marvelling at the fragile wonder of existence. Once desperate to be anything other than himself (hear The Soft Boys’ (I Want To Be An) Anglepoise Lamp for proof), Hitchcock seems increasingly comfortable on the physical plane as he enters his seventies, and if The Confuser’s Fab-Macca-goes-pub-rock thing will irk some, true believers will delight at its resolutely sunny take on death and decline.
Breathless dances on the edge of the abyss, The Vanishing Kind melds a homage to Bryan Ferry with thoughts of mortality, while Monday For Me is a Bob Dylan-esque reckoning with Hitchcock finding love and a sense of place in Nashville. Conclusion: life is precious, be glad while you still can.
The Confuser is out July 24 on Tiny Ghost.
