The Prodigy
Other Stage, Sunday June 29, 2025
And now the end is near. And when facing such a thing, it’s worth remembering Dylan Thomas’ celebrated 1947 poem Do not go gentle into that good night, and particularly its commandment: “burn and rave at close of day.”
Veteran dance insurrectionists The Prodigy have it covered. The super-immense crowd know what’s coming when they hear air raid sirens, and god, what a noise follows - the sound of punk slamming into techno, and bodies flying around as if caught in permanent collision in a crash test film.
Drummer Leo Crabtree and guitarist Rob Holliday layer on extra rock noise as Liam Howlett operates his banks of synths, samples and sequencers. The breakbeat noise-assault could be likened to Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad production team cranked up really high: songs are repurposed and stripped, with sparing use of vocal hooks on big tunes like Voodoo People and Firestarter. Instead it’s MC Maxim who booms out the Prodge core message of liberation and ‘avin’ it.
For all those on a downer on returning to civilian life, he helpfully preludes Their Law with “fuck Monday morning!”
Earlier, Maxim (who drops f-bombs as liberally as Charli XCX did on Saturday, and would make a good galactic supervillain in a Marvel film) had remembered the group’s late dancer/ rave gremlin Keith Flint, who died in 2019. A Glastonbury appearance for that year was duly cancelled. “Six years ago we lost our brother,” he says. “This show tonight is dedicated to Mr.Fucking Flint! …he’s here.” When green lasers etch silhouettes of Keith in his Firestarter guise, devil’s horns and all, onto the stage, the insanely huge, all-dancing crowd show their appreciation.
With breaks in the pain provided by proggy instrumental interludes and dramatic lighting, it comes so thick and fast you just have to go with the thrilling earthquake. They end with an edited version of Out Of Space, with a dedication to its late voice Max Romeo. This was, in short, one of those shows to remember when chewing over the best year/best sets at Glastonbury conundrum. “You did Mr.Flint proud,” says Maxim. And The Prodigy did likewise for Glastonbury.
