Marissa Nadler – Dead City Emily

REVIEWING MARISSA NADLER'S new album, July, in this month's MOJO, Sylvie Simmons describes the Boston-based songer-songwriter’s sixth album as a melancholic late-night delight, zoning in on the singer’s "sweetly narcotic" voice, and the "moody inner territory" of sound that she has managed to make her home for the past 14 years. Recorded at Seattle’s Avast Studio, with producer Randall Dunn (Earth, Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room) and Oregon-born composer/violinist Eyvand Kang, July possesses a blurred refractile beauty, an eerie winter-light warmth which is perfectly captured by directors Derrick Belcham and Emily Terndrup in their film for for the album track, Dead City Emily. Look out for possible nods to the album cover art of Simon Larbelastier and the photography of Francesca Woodman.

July will be released on February 10 on Bella Union and February 4 in the US on Sacred Bones.
