HAVING BEEN IN production for what feels like a decade, the first footage to emerge from the André 3000 (aka André Benjamin) Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side, has finally emerged online. The film, written by John Ridley (12 Years A Slave, Three Kings, U-Turn), will chronicle Hendrix’s road to stardom throughout 1966 and ’67, ending with his seismic performance at Monterey Pop. Ridley has also directed the movie. Brit star Imogen Poots plays Linda Keith – the woman responsible for launching Jimi’s career in London – while Haley Atwell will appear as Hendrix’s long-term girlfriend Kathy Etchingham (you can check out the latter’s response to one early review of the movie in the comments section here).
It certainly looks like Benjamin has nailed that cosmic Hendrix drawl, but don’t expect to hear Jimi’s music in All Is By My Side – the Hendrix Estate did not participate in the making of the film.
The movie will be screened at SXSW next week and is set for release later this year.
